When Radio Ink devotes 8 pages to a story, you can be assured it’s a big story. The industry trade publication’s August 22 issue features an in-depth interview with Paul Brenner, President of TagStation and NextRadio®, in which Brenner discloses a lot about the history of the NextRadio – and its promising future.

The article details Brenner’s role in assembling the team behind the app, growing the number of app-supported Android smartphones, pushing FM radio leaders to make more stations more interactive, and building support for the project among NAB and radio broadcasters. Recent efforts, according to Brenner, aim to show national advertisers how NextRadio can provide them with data comparable with that of digital outlets.

In 2017, Brenner promises, the story will shift. “You’re going to hear more about the ability to measure the listener and give that direct feedback. I think that’s when everybody is going to pay attention. That’s when broadcasters are going to see ROI. Advertising agencies are going to be calling us looking for, as an industry, how they can leverage this platform.”

Brenner also gives his unique insider view on how cloud-based TagStation rose from servicing Apple’s iTunes Store and if the smartphone giant might be persuaded to support the NextRadio app, despite an enormous investment in Beats 1.
